It is an okay movie, but its clear that the style of acting used by Tom Cruise in this movie is not genuine. He tries too hard to imitate Jim Carrey which is shows that he was not used to This would explain why some reviews say that he "lacks depth," and this shows very clearly with the comedic elements within the acting- it comes off as more awkward than funny.
On the storyline, it is a good story and the earlier Spanish 1997 version may have been better. However, this retelling in dreams does not have any smoothness to it at all ,and it comes off as perversely weird and devoid of understanding. Had they based the interrogation scenes in a more " Call of Duty Black Ops" manner, or even had less interviews and kept the interviews to the intro and ending, it would have been told much better.
A unified plot, as Aristotle claimed in the Poetics, would rely more on the experiences of the character. This movie, being with incomplete episodes in the life of the character, could not at all tell the character's life in a sufficient manner and the story becomes a cringing mess. A movie which is to be forgotten while the greater glories of Tom Cruise, namely- Last Samurai, Top Gun, A Few Good Men, Far And Away, Mission Impossible, etc becomes a stronger memory than this cringing movie.
The ending itself becomes the saving point where everything is brought together ,but without any unity prior to it, the movie barely saves itself with such a beautiful ending. This movie, though, becomes nothing more than a small bruise in the prolific career, and body of Tom Cruise movies.
So long as you can tolerate Tom Cruise's cringing performance, his team often makes up for the poor acting which makes it a decent movie to watch. So, I must call it a mediocre movie in terms of its ambition that becomes close but no cigar. If it had been filmed now, nineteen years after the production, it would have been with better techniques and the film style would have been better portrayed. This is only , of course, assuming Tom Cruise is either not in it or if he would not steal the style of Jim Carrey.
