The comments on this film are quite "interesting" and seem either patronizing or nonchalant. This is a typical John Hughes production from the 80s, and in terms of storyline, is not much different than contemporary teen flicks of the present day. The cultural representations are clearly not inclusive and problematic, but the film also centers on a category of society that is mocked in Hughes's films (if viewers think this type of lifestyle was emblematic of the 80s, then they need to either speak with someone who grew up in the era or do some historical research). I would think the "romance" part of the film is not the focus of the storyline, but the anxiety, uncertainty, and masochism of adolescence and young adulthood are things to consider. For the younger viewers, rather than situating the film in the sensibilities of the post-2010 era, view the film with a mind to how society treats/views teens and life within high schools / secondary schools. What is familiar, what has changed? There has been many changes since I attended high school back in the 80s, but the psychological, social, and physical attributes of teens and how society values these younger generations has not changed that much. The primary difference (and a significant one) is we did not have social media in the 80s. I would also say that the Breakfast Club would be the better film since all it removes all the secondary distractions and focuses on the situations of each character.
