What's wrong with Jake Gyllenhaal? Is he getting really desperate now? Velvet Buzzsaw is like an avant-garde B grade horror film filled with mostly average actors. But looks like they had to sell the movie so they managed to rope in Jake G and John M. Yes, have to admit Jake G has done a good job as a gay art-critic. You can see he has worked hard on picking up the minute details of the mannerisms and body language of a gay man who is confused with his sexuality sometimes. But nothing extra ordinary here. He is a seasoned actor and that's what's expected of him. But comparing this to some of his better movies like Nightcrawler would be really unfair. The other actors have done sub-par acting. The dialogue delivery is either too 'text-book' obvious or forced or even awkward sometimes. The penultimate scene where this random couple buys off the painting from a street seller. C'mon really? I have seen better acting in some amateur Indie movies shot with a phone! The girl from Stranger Things deserves better roles though! Netflix, just because Bird box did fairly well doesn't mean every such movie will. Raise your bar please. Until then it's 2/5 stars!
