This visual adaptation of an amazing book, my personal journey into my ancestral history was validated and affirmed. The connections to our present and stolen past have endured in spite of the enormous obstacles to true freedom in the United States for African Americans.
The African American influence on U.S. food culture is undeniable. Although, as in many other areas of American culture, much widespread credit is not attributed to nor acknowledged by the dominant culture; one is reminded that dominant is not synonymous with superior.
So much of the African American experience has been in trying to fit in. We never needed to. There are so many aspects of our culture that stand out and showcases our resilience - whether acknowledged or not. This show is an experience of anyone wishing to truly be an ally. Allyship is not only standing up against injustice - but also acknowledgment of and respect for culture.
