I'm no critic, but I daresay that this movie IS AMAZING! It has been almost everyone's opinion. However, I'm only giving this movie three stars. In order, I will be reviewing the soundtrack, the plot, and the accuracy.
I am mesmerized with the movie's songs! Right from the intro, it has my full attention right until the end - and I like what they did with "The Greatest Show". My top three favorites are "The Other Side", "Come Alive", and "From Now On". There's just something in them that makes me dance and groovy! The rhythm, the lyrics, the motivations and the flow of the songs, overall, is PERFECT!
The plot. It is incredible, amazing, tells lots of stories whether the story is about struggles of family, individual, or romance. The only problem I've come across is the pace of the plot. In the 1 hour and 30 minutes of the movie, I felt that, as a whole, it's been too fast-paced and caused problems with my understanding of it. I can't swallow and process one scene before jumping right to another especially at the middle towards the end. They've essentially kind of used the songs to summarize what happened. Phillip and Anne's romance (struggle) is really short, P.T's part, the main plot, is covered well but I think it could've developed the relationship between him and his daughters, so is the struggles of "the bearded lady" and the other characters, especially General Tom Thumb. As a result, I never get to fully taste the feeling of victory the movie offered at the end. So, bleh.
The accuracy, historical accuracy to be exact, is somewhat off. Yes, P.T Barnum is a real person, so is his wife and daughters but at the most part, it's starting to drift off to its own plot rather than to follow Barnum's life. To be fair, no one wanted to portray someone who supports animal cruelty and some others, and him a somewhat horrible person. Even without this inspiration from the real-life P.T Barnum, this movie would be amazing if they follow the same plot.
In short, if they didn't squash everything together in a limited time slot, and made more time for each separate plots, it would be over all fantastic.
But I really recommend the songs, THEY'RE FIRE.
