I wanted to give this 1 star, but seeing as how it was slight better than m. Nights movie I will give it two. Just know spoilers for the season to those who haven’t watched
Overall the show had some good parts, but I feel as if the entire season was severely rushed, they had taken a season comprised of 20 25 minute episodes and condensed it down to 8 45-55 minute episodes, which if fine. History has show people enjoy longer episodes in a shorter season compared to a long season, but I feel like that is a disservice to atla as there is so much to tell, this version also feels as if they missed out on telling much of the story in longer episodes compared to the original in shorter episodes.
Not only is that one of the problems is had but after researching and watching the full season I realized that they had taken story elements from book 2 and even the final season of book 3 and put some of those into season on of the live action.
The other problems I had was due to some of the changes that were made due to the societal culture of today, removing Sokka’s blatant and inherently sexist nature completely changed the character, while I do agree that it was a okay change and they did find a way to have dolls learn the lessons learned in the cartoon, it was done so in a very sloppy and rushed way. I also disagree with the change made to Sokka’s and Katara’s father in the ep: Mask’s, their father was always a proud warrior who cared for his family and knew they were worthy, hard working and good hearted kids. But in this adaptation Hakoda talked down on his son and felt disgraced by Sokka which is completely out of character.
Other minor problems were mainly in the acting for the characters. Iroh was a warm hearted and lazy father figure who made spiritual/knowledge and tea based advice, which overall disappeared in this version. Zuko was always and angry drama queen, where in this version it was troubling at times to figure out if he was angry and really lacked on the dramatics. Other characters and the interactions they had on screen felt very forced and weak.
Overall I feel like that had great potential with this but unfortunately were working against a bar that had been set very high on what to live up to, but in my honest opinion and experience with the show in some ways were worse than the live action movie or just barely passed the mark set by said live action movie
