I didn't expect to be as moved by the performances of Jonah Hill and Eddy Murphy as I did. Neither actor gave a performance that I have come to expect from them, resulting in an emotional response I was not prepared for. I was expecting more of an over the top comedic performance riffing on racism between white and black, jew and Muslim yet they delivered edgy and controlled characters worthy of Academy Awards. The wit and humour in the writing paired with the uncomfortablness I felt watching the racial overtones made the ending uplifting and cathartic. If you have been waiting to see Mr. Murphy return to acting you will not be disappointed.
