This movie was not made for critics, and the disparity between audience score and critics score could not make this more clear.
This movie made for the fans of the series, and those willing to shelve their disbelief and have a bit of fun with a genuinely well made and enjoyable experience. Even then, there's beautiful camera work, stellar acting from Hutchinson and all the youth actors, and absolutely perfect recreation of the beloved animatronics. In his limited screentime, Matthew Illiard, naturally, steals the show.
It treats the source material with respect, and diverges from it when it must, without ever feeling like a wall of needless exposition. It tells the story in fairly plain terms, making it both accessible for new fans, and less of a drag for the old fans. There's so much for fans to love, and a surprisingly well crafted piece of camp and suspenseful horror for both fans and newcomers to delight in.
Blumhouse has always handled hauntings well, and this is no exception. It doesn't succeed despite the unbelievable premise, but leans into it, and accepts it well. You will not come out of this film shaking, but there are some fantastically tense moments, some of which had my heart pounding. It appreciates established horror tropes rather than dismissing them, even taking the time to acknowledge that these things don't need to be complicated; it's ghosts, let's move on.
It is, by no means, perfect cinema. I have a handful of problems, largely with the pacing, but overall, as a fan of the series, it was everything I had wanted it to be. It never felt mean spirited towards fans, and yet never relied too hard on fanservice. Moments of fanservice felt less of a selling point and more of an acknowledgement of the reason the movie was made. Instead, it is a love letter to a dedicated fanbase, and tells a new version of a beloved story that makes it feel fresh for even those of us (like myself) who have been here since 2015. Not everything needs to be a commentary or high art. Movies can just be fun to watch.
I could not be more thrilled to have gotten to experience this movie. Critical horror fans should perhaps give this a miss. It's a simple story, and isn't anything groundbreaking, but those willing to shelve their disbelief, and fans of the series, new or old? You should give it a chance. Go have some fun, and get ready for Freddy.
