I am so disgusted by the homophobia and misogyny in the other negative reviews so I had to leave one that hits on what is *actually* deterring about this show. The plot line is so ridiculously dragged out that it is almost nonexistent. There is so little happening in each episode that could’ve been revealed better in 10 minutes of decent writing. It seems the entire budget went into visuals, which are admittedly impressive, but do nothing to make up for how devastatingly slow-moving the show is. I’ve no complaints about the actors themselves, but I will say that Imogene is a poorly-written character who is not nearly compelling enough as the protagonist to keep the viewer invested in such a drag of a series. I always enjoy watching Mandy Patinkin, but I’m sure there’s some merit to the abundance of criticism of his fake accent- just nothing that bothered my untrained ears.
As for all the complaints about the sex scenes, while I agree there are unnecessarily graphic displays of nudity where there could’ve been more subtle shots in better taste, what concerns me most is that only the lesbian encounter early on is fully explicit. Representation is necessary but this only further sexualizes and commodifies WLW relationships as something to be enjoyed for the viewing of others; if the hetero scenes were shot with as much nudity that wouldn’t be a concern. Personally, I prefer less of both- I don’t need to see full nudity in any capacity when I sit down to watch a murder mystery- but that’s a matter of preference.
The biggest problem I have with this show is the lack of action or plot advancement in every single episode. There will be 37 minutes of buildup for a 2 minute reveal that is never worth the wait. ***And just because the characters aren’t all straight white people does not mean it’s “token” casting it’s literally reflecting real world demographics. Cry harder xx***
