Overall, I loved it! The story was well organized. It’s not what I expected from Mattel, honestly. I was kinda expecting a kiddy story, where Ken makes Barbie fall in love with him, and they live happily ever after like Barbie Movies, towards the first few scenes. But as it processes, you realize it’s a story about self discovery and self love. At least on Ken’s side.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Mainly for Ken, he was looking to make Barbie fall in love with him, because as shown in most of Mattel, Barbie is the main icon. So, Ken thought he didn’t matter without Barbie. As also shown, Barbies are bought way more than Kens. But at the end, Barbie makes him realize that he can live without her in his life, and he can be his own person.
On Barbie’s end, she loved her life as it was. Perfect every single day. But she then learned that not everything has to be perfect every day, because the world is full of surprises. At the end of the movie, she leaves Barbie land with the choice by Ruth, (the original creator of Barbie) who I’m pretty sure was computer graphics.
My main problem was that it promoted that Men are the source to all Women’s problems, which is stereotypical, but not true. Most Men are very kind and respectful to Women, and some aren’t but it does make it seem like 100%, Men are the reason for Women issues like Depression, Anxiety, etc. I get it: I’m probably looking at it from the wrong perspective, considering that I’m a female myself, but it still concerns me.
My second main problem was that it kinda showed that one gender rules over the other. Realistically, that’s untrue in most cases, but I guess that must’ve been added to add more plot to the story. At the end, the Barbie’s were still in control, but the Ken’s are able to work their way up, to get just as many rights as the Barbie’s, after showing what happens when their in control.
SPOILERS FINISHED!
Margot owned that role. The classic Barbie feet got me in the trailer, but she was the perfect person to play stereotypical Barbie. If not her, I don’t know who.
Ryan was just as good. He really captured Ken’s personality. If you’ve watched Barbie: Life in the Dream House (which I have), you’ll see that it’s shown that Barbie never had a real so and so ‘crush’ on Ken, and that’s why he was so obsessed with her.
If I’m being totally honest, I kinda wanted to see Skipper, Stacy, and Chelsea (aka Barbie’s sisters), more in the movie. They were in my top favorite characters.
If you want to get a good laugh, this is the movie for you. But, there were some children in there who were under 11, which is the recommended age, that I was worried about. Some of the jokes in there are actually only jokes teens and adults will get. (If your 8 year old gets it, that’s on you.)
Much better than the Super Mario Movie, if I’m being totally honest. Even, I think it was better than The Little Mermaid. It had the most interesting storyline I’ve ever seen. Best movie this year. Beat that, Disney.
