I would nominate Blade Runner 2049 as one of the best, if not the best films ever made. I am a huge fan of Villeneuve and Ridley Scott. This film is an ambient masterpiece. It weaves together the music, visual effects and story into a seamless beauty that I see no flaw in whatsoever.
Every movement, ever word or phrase is executed with precision and the utmost of meaning. I enjoy how this story uses the complex concept of how a created being experiences love and other emotions. I feel that it is a metaphor for how we as humans are created or exist and our relationship with our creator or nature impacts us. Humans created replicants and similar beings, like Joi to serve them and meet their needs. Much to the chagrin of the creators, the created do not always agree with the plan. I feel like this movie in particular confronts that idea, that God or Nature (I feel like there is room for either interpretation), cannot expect the created to be pleased with being brought about or how they are intended to be allowed to live. Villeneuve repeatedly confronts the ideas of love and creation (whether via god(s) or via evolution via nature or both) throughout his movies, and I truly enjoy his philosophical musings on these subjects. He often leaves room for interpretation as well.
The acting is superb. The costume and set designs are amazing and rival the first movie. The soundtrack is one of my all time favorites. It might sound rude, but if someone does not like this movie I feel like it is likely due to a lack of fundamental understanding of film making and complex stories. If you like a good complex story that does not play out in a simple liner fashion, than this is your movie. If you cannot handle a story that is complex, maybe this one is not for you. Don't blame the movie though. It does make sense, if you really understand how to read a film.
Again, I think it could be one, if not the best films of all time. It was worth the wait.
