This film has multiple layers including sexual power play, explores racism, American attitudes, drugs and violence. The introspection of the hero and the lack of contractual sexual attraction between the Gardner and the girl produces a tension which is quite different from what is expected. And interestingly for an American film it lacks cloying sentimentality. I thought it was brilliantly played out by these actors. It is a thinking film, by no means shallow. I liked the surreal dream scene driving through the flowers.
