I loved this movie. I recommend it to anyone. Spoiler laden review, stop reading if you don’t want to know beforehand. I was a real creature double feature fan as a girl. I’m not sure what some viewers may have considered hard to understand or interpret, it seems like a straight-forward monster movie, to me.
I thought it was very real. The father’s unexpected death at the beginning of the film in a literal ‘bolt out of the blue’ bizarre accident—senseless, tragic, and isn’t that often the way with these sorts of things? OJ has mouths to feed, as he puts it, and no real time to mourn. Their financial problems and the one thing after another way-of-it I think resonate with a modern audience. Again, it feels very real situation to the viewer, a place you could very well visit. I think that’s what makes Jean Jacket such a great Kaiju. You’re already along for the ride, you believe all these events could unfold just the way they did. “The aliens” (maybe, are we sure Jean Jacket came from space?) aren’t beeping green fellows with ray guns, just one hungry jellyfish-like creature, settling into a new space, trying to figure out what’s good to eat, here.
Perhaps the ending is a bit sentimental - again, it’s another feature of the back in the day monster movie (spoiler alert, Kong didn’t eat Fay Wray). You weren’t assured early on that your favorites were going to live, either, I cheered a bit at the end when the heroes emerge victorious. Perfectly agreeable way to spend two hours.
