It could have been good but both of the characters were deplorable. If the main guy had been anything but a white male, the message wouldn't have been nearly as well received. Why didn't they make the main character a black or asian guy? Why is everything (especially on NetFlix) this unrelenting attack against the white man? The message of the movie was a complete mess and somehow they tried to make the unprovoked attacking of a guy with a knife reasonable, because he had 'raped' the female character - which again could be debatable depending on your point of view. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending him, he was a pathetic little husk of a man, but I don't think the knife thing was necessary and she didn't come across as 'forgiving' or whatever just because she only cut him a few times. She still, herself turned into a monster as she further trampled him down. Also, were they trying to justify what she said about her not liking the guy, that he stalked her, etc. etc.? In this situation it's okay to make up such a lie? It comes across as confused, badly written propaganda. They were both pathetic and terrible in their relationship.

I'm torn by this show. It's entertaining as a show, because of the budget, etc. but the message (propaganda) is very worrying. All of the characters who are non-white are wholesome and kind, loving - and misunderstood (Eg. the mentally ill (black) mother, who is actually just misunderstood and holds all wisdom and knowledge (for some reason)), and her daughter - the main character's (black) friend who can do no wrong (again - for some reason). Whereas all of the white characters are violent/bad/crazy/ill-intentioned and dysfunctional. Even the 'good' male characters are flawed (though ultimately forgiven or again, misunderstood as long as they're not white!) And the only female characters who are ever in the wrong are, again - white. This is a narrative that is willingly pushed in several shows across Netflix by white and non-white people alike. It feels like a cultural version of 'reparations'. Overall, it comes across as damaging and racist, and all of the supersticious, ghostly aspects come across as yet another example of cultural 'non-white' 'wisdom', that is being introduced to tear down the west, science, and all that is held dear by rational minded people. It does its job of carrying out propaganda, (going undetected by the mentally malnourished) extremely well and in an entertaining way - but those who can see clearly can see the show's 'bad heart'.

Why do people hate this movie? Because it scares them, and they realise the best times are probably behind us? I think if you gave this film anything less than a 3 you're probably not quite there. This film was very realistic, and without spoiling the end, they managed to grasp the essence of what the west has achieved, and that it might just be a fleeting moment. To keep and protect our freedom, and the most free thing we can do (create art), we have done well. However, we've reached a plateau - and the enemies we've made along the way will probably one day take it away from us, because they haven't reached the level of freedom that we have.
