Was curious over the book coz of the title and then I saw lots of people saying its the worst book they've read so I stopped thinking about it. And then after three books later while I'm finding something new to read, I got back to thinking of this book. It's really mainly coz I love main character death in books. Weird, I know. So the title itself is so gripping. And then I saw that there are lots of other people who loved it. I thought I should just check it out myself. Stories are subjective anyway.
I was already so taken by the book because of it's alternate universe and I love the premise if it all. It's so well-thought but not to the point that there's too many new confusing terms that it just turns your attention off. It was a little slow, but I understand the need for it because the whole book is just less than 24 hours. I bet you not many can write a whole book that just centered around one day and not have any flashbacks. So that was a good feat in my opinion.
The additions of other characters is interesting because it's always linked to the two main characters somehow. And also gives us the view that yes these people didn't get the call because they are not dying but they are not really celebrating life either. But of course sometimes I feel like skipping the other characters coz I want to know what happens to Rufus and Mateo real quick. Its just impatience😂
Was ready to give it a 3 or 3.5 coz its great but a little slow for me BUT THE ENDING I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Like the way both of them die is really unexpected?
!! SPOILERS AHEAD !!
For Mateo it serves like a reminder that even if he didnt get the courage to go out of his house and just stay inside so he wont die, he would still die. Because at one point he would have opened the stove if he had stayed at home. Maybe he would have died earlier.
For Rufus, ngl I was glad he's dying because I can't take this boy having to see another loved one die right infront of him just like his family. And the fact that he died listening to Mateo's voice, it broke me so bad but at the same time I'm glad because it's like Mateo is with him even till his last breath.
The romance was a slow progress one but logical. They are new friends afterall. But the hints throughout their journey that showed they started to like each other, that was amazing I just love it. Like when Lidia held Mateo's hand and Rufus was eyeing their hands or when Rufus could actually just leave Mateo coz boy was too scared to even ride a bike like it's frustrating but Rufus actually stayed and even stopped cycling.
It was a really great read. Not exactly a book I can't put down but it was definitely a book I want to know the ending despite the ending being on the title.
