I suppose Marvel has set itself up for a tough time ahead as they plod on in the MCU's next phase. While I love the Spider-man movies featuring Tom Holland for its charm, humour and relatable feels, this one misses that mark and delves instead into a world of Spiderman nostalgia and yet another potentially world destroying problem created by the superheroes themselves.
At this stage it feels like Marvel are running out of ideas and pandering instead to moments that can excite fans (and there were many of those in this movie, too) while overlaying it with more intensity than you'd expect in a Tom Holland Spiderman flick. The plot left me dissatisfied, the conclusion too, and the movie had me wishing Taika Waititi had been involved in making it so it had some of the sparkle we love in Marvel movies back.
This film relied heavily on Spiderman lore nostalgia rather than adding anything meaningful to the larger story arc (even if it does affect it) and the convenience of characters and situations felt overly simplistic. Great action sequences though.
