I scrolled through each and every 1 star review and the majority of them were all addressing the same issues. The comedy, praising hitler/nazis, and how inappropriate it is for making light of such a terrible event in our history. A lot of these people who wrote these reviews only got through the first 20 minutes or walked out halfway through. I don’t think they understand what the movie was trying to convey.
This movie is about the naivety of a little boy living in nazi Germany. He doesn’t understand that what they’re doing is wrong, we see the movie from his perspective. To him, hitler is good and Jews are bad. With that in mind when the characters are praising hitler the movie not saying “he’s a good person and this is the lesson of the movie!” It’s highlighting the pure naivety of the children and general public. The hitler we see throughout the movie is the imagination of Jojo. It shows how he views hitler as a good person, a friend.
Another topic of interest is the humor. I saw that a lot of people think the scene where they kill the rabbit is supposed to be funny but that’s not the case. The scene where the nazi soldier snaps the rabbits neck is not meant to be a humorous joke, it’s meant to dehumanize the nazis and show that they take the compassion and naturally loving nature of jojo as a weakness. We see this when jojo runs off into the woods as they laugh and yell “jojo rabbit.” We as the viewers are meant to feel sorry for jojo and disgusted by the nazi soldiers, just because the characters were laughing doesn’t mean it was supposed to be taken as a joke. You don’t see scenes in movies, were bullies are laughing and beating up a kid, playing a laugh track. Besides that comedy is subjective, if you don’t find the jokes funny it can’t be helped.
Lastly the movie wasn’t making light of a terrible event. As I said before it’s from the perspective of a child in nazi Germany. We, the viewers, are seeing the world from his perspective. We see the world how he sees the world.
I personally absolutely adore this movie, not much so for the humor but the very nature of it. I can’t change if people like this movie or not but I hope to help people better understand it.
