What started off as a brilliantly crafted satire on capitalism lost its way with sudden left turns into random, unrelated plotlines. I loved the first half of the movie, where it set up its brilliant premise - shrinking to live a life of luxury. From the very title of the movie - Downsizing - to the premise, the movie is clearly a take on the soul crushing nature of a capitalistic world that does not have enough resources to go around, even as the rich celebrate their booze and cash filled quests.
The movie was brilliant until the protagonist decides to take the blue pill, both literally and figuratively. The movie rapidly descends from there into a jarring mix of unconnected plot threads, banal philosophy, and what appears to be a cringeworthy attempt at humour.
Tldr - what could have been an epic along the lines of the Truman show ended up wasting a brilliant premise and being a thoroughly forgettable movie about nothing. 2 stars for the disappointment.
