I really wanted to love this show. It immediately made me think of the show “Bodyguard” with Richard Madden, which is one of my all time favourite shows, so immediately I was drawn in.
The writing and the acting are the two main issues that make this show bad for me.
Specifically, Hong Chau’s acting as Farr. She has the emotional range of a wet wipe. Her acting in this show was awful. Incredibly bland and unconvincing in every single line she delivered. No matter what emotion or feel her dialogue needed. She was very bad at portraying a woman (or just anyone) in a position of power role. None of her lines delivered felt natural. Every time she swore or attempted to come across as authoritative, I cringed. She was just horrendous. I never want to see her act in anything again my gosh. I enjoyed D.B Woodside as Monks, and Gabriel Bassos’ acting as Peter, and the main assassin guy was alright. But other than that most of the main actors did an extremely poor job in their roles.
I also didn’t like how the show/writers portrayed Rose and Peter’s romantic relationship. There were zero “moments” or “special” scenes between the two of them to indicate any real chemistry or connection, beyond Rose simply just being grateful Peter saved her/ is protecting her. Instead, we immediately are thrown in the face with a scene of the two of them on the boat, all of a sudden making out. With no build up or lead to this type of relationship. I wish they added in some “moments” or closeness between the characters in that way, before they all of a sudden kissed after NO romantic exchange previously. It felt very forced, and since we weren’t given these moments of chemistry between them, the “big reveal” moment of when they kiss for the first time, doesn’t feel special at all. Boring if anything. I didn’t feel overly happy or excited at the fact they got together. Since nothing previously pointed towards that dynamic between the two of them.
Also, the consistent scenes between the male and female assassins. Some may disagree, but I feel far too much screen time and writing was given to these characters, which could’ve been given to the two main characters Rose and Peter, developing their relationship. I’m not sure about other people, but I simply DON’T CARE about a pair of assassins being shown in this way. I don’t see why the writers assumed we would care so much about the two of them romantically? They are assassins. Killers. Frankly, I don’t care to see them in a romantic relationship. It doesn’t benefit me in any way. I’m not rooting for them, since they’re murderers. So why should I care when her male partner dies?? Am I the only one who feels this? Maybe I’m not sure. But there were a lot of intimate scenes between these two which I felt was just unneeded.
Overall, I still sat through the entire show and “enjoyed it”. Mostly because I was rooting for it to get better from these points^ which it didn’t really. It wasn’t great but wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Again, pretty bad writing/show but the type that you still have a craving to watch and finish even though you know it’s not that great.
