Most people giving this game one star are upset due to hackers or were previously banned. The game specifically tells you it is a test version. Therefor there will be bugs, unbalanced game play, cheaters, server issues, and many other sights for sore eyes.
Beside those aspects, Tarkov is a well done first person shooter with survival mechanics similar to a battle royal. One key identifying factor is the ability to take back what you found in a match in order to use it in the following matches, similar to Hunt:Showdown.
However, the game only gives you one ultimate objective.. Extract. You can lay low in buildings stuffing loot into your backpack, sprint through shootouts more action packed than a John Wick movie, make peace with enemy players to increase squad strength, or even attempt the most ridiculous and tedious missions for some rare items. As long as you extract after, you've won the match.
This amount of flexibility makes the game incredibly fun, but the biggest thing to consider is its difficulty. This is nothing like Call of Duty, every death is felt down to the core as you lose everything. You're even made to mend your own wounds before going out into another match by spending in-game currency you've acquired. Newcomers will constantly meet death time and time again as there is no tutorial included in the current version. To me this is a welcome change! Too many newer games have easy, simple, and boring game play for seasoned gamers.
Unfortunately, I cannot give this game five stars due to the developers themselves. They are very bullheaded and will not listen to player feedback. I admire their will in making a game they solely desire, but some decisions are terrible. In an effort to make the game harder and harder they're losing players. Enjoyment is also a huge factor to consider, which is quickly fading. There is such a thing as a game being too hard to be fun.
Not to mention the issue of banning. Many players who are upset they were defeated in a raid post videos on social media "claiming" they were beaten by a "hacker". Some are very true, but a growing amount are false. This wouldn't be an issue if developers didn't ban actual players based off of these poor perspective videos.
Due to these issues I must settle at three stars. Until the developers can start taking their game seriously and stop focusing on their sole desires my review will stay this way. I'm sure they don't find going into a match a hundred times in order to find one item fun or being banned by a video uploaded onto social media that didn't prove anything.
Will it get better? Probably over time, but that depends on how long you're willing to wait. Games don't last forever and rotten developers are the quickest way to destroy them. It still is a game worth checking out even with these issues.
Thanks for reading, adios.
