I found the first 2/3 of this book really good, gripping and harrowing. However I found the last third of the novel unsatisfactory, it does not seem to hang together, too fragmented, made up of mini stories, disconnected. I can see what the author was trying to do, i.e. write about the aftermath of the Burmese railway and its effects on the survivors but there were too many characters, if he had just picked Evans and one of the camp Japanese officers that would have been better.
