I love studio ghibli Hayao Miyazaki movies. This one did something no other Hayao Miyazaki film did. Although movies like spirited away and the win rises placed number 2 and 3 of my years best films of their specific year. Boy and the heron was my favorite film of 2023. It even beat my second favorite film which won best picture in Oppenheimer. Boy and the heron follows a young boy named mahito whose mom died in the war. While his father went to work constantly he went to go live with his stepmom. While living there a heron comes in and leads him into this world between life and death to go see his real mom. While going into this new world he meets a bunch of pelicans who eat the warawara turns out becythey are starving then go into a world with giant evil parakeets and the biggest bad guy the parakeet king portrayed by Dave Bautista. Their is so much beautiful visual spectacles even in the world of 2D animation. Hayao Miyazaki made a masterpiece of a film. It ended up getting a PG 13 rating so as much as I love it this film I wouldn't say is made for the little ones Hayao Miyazaki made a masterpiece and is my favorite film of 2023
