There is something missing in modern films.. something so familiar and close to home that you don't feel when watching a movie that is dominated by CGI special effects and linear storytelling. It is the human element. Ironically, this is exactly what is delivered by a show that is portrayed mainly by puppets, and it is delivered in the most human way possible.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is an absolute triumph of modern film making. It is a real and tangible expression of artistry expressed in 10 episodes of television that I was not expecting to find, and yet so grateful to have seen. Whether or not you are familiar with the original Jim Henson movie, you are in for a treat.
Ignore the fact that you are seeing the outpouring of countless hours of passionate effort, design, and manual labor to create the most realistic and tactile display of storytelling that has been seen in decades and you are still left with a rich imaginative setting and compelling story that hooks you from beginning to end. Every detail of this show was lovingly crafted and expertly told that it is easy to forget that you are watching puppets.
The visual display is absolute eye candy, and the characters feel so real in their emotions. In a way, I can understand the reason why Netflix chose to cancel this show due to the insane amount of production necessary to create it, but I have absolutely no doubt that this was a mistake. It really is one of the best Netflix productions to have ever been made, and although it may not be the most popular show on the Netflix roster, it will undoubtedly stand the test of time. My only hope is that one day this show is revitalized.. and we get another chance to visit Thra.
