I would only read this book if you want to question your will to live. I had to read this book for my 10th grade English class and I can say that this was the worst book I’ve ever read in my life. When Titus sees Violet for the first time, his first thought is “she was the most beautiful girl, like, ever.” Seriously, HOW is this guy straight?? Possibly the worst part of the entire book, the juice scene. It would have been a fine scene without the pervy author’s narrating. Titus/ the author describe violet’s tongue as “a pink slug gargoyle” and later only confirmed my suspicion that the author was a total perv by saying something along the lines of “the juice had been born whole, and her tongue stayed perched in the air, sending the globe on its trembling progress into the world”. LIKE WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN???? After reading this a little part of me died inside, and my innocence disappeared before my eyes.
There comes a point in the book where you completely give up trying to understand the idea of the book. There was zero character development. I have no clue what anything looked like (bc the author is terrible at descriptions). Bc the author is a perv, he seemed only to enjoy going DEEP into descriptions about his creepy fedishes, which included tongues, juice, and open wounds. At least he was able to express his secretly sexual side to a bunch of horrified teenagers. Dreamers gonna dream 🤷♀️.
It makes me super uncomfortable that the only people who enjoyed this book and gave it an award are a bunch of boomers who ig seem to enjoy reading about teenage boys getting turned on every chapter.
