Riveting film. Richly and romantically set for the most part in the French countryside, and beautifully photographed, the film hauntingly conveys the terrors of Vichy France during wartime in the 1940s and the punishing struggle, often fatal, of the French Resistance fighters against their German occupiers. The viciousness and deadly predations of the Nazis against the Jews are an ongoing theme, and French collaborators do not escape responsibility. The story focuses on the experiences of an Englishwoman fighting alongside the French Resistance and her consequential involvement with a Resistance fighter and his family. The production design is superb, as is the cinematography, and the performances are outstanding. Beautiful to look at and wonderful to watch.
