I gave this movie 3 stars because of the topics they touched on and good acting.
There are many undercurrents in this movie such as the setting their choosing to speak in, which means they're already manipulating the situation because, if under investigation, they can explain meeting for a dinner but cannot explain, convincingly, meeting somewhere such as a warehouse.
If we want to talk about mental health then we do have to explore how a parent influences a child. We as a society react to things based on how the picture is painted AND how we feel (or don't feel) about the artist. In the case of this movie, we don't feel sad for the boys AT ALL because we saw them in the act and didn't build up enough sympathy beforehand to want to protect them. That's a parent's natural instinct, usually. Many people have a resentment towards the "affluent" even if they can relate. The "affluent" sometimes act like they can't relate, which is where much outrage comes from.
Many people in society feel that those boys lives shouldn't be "ruined" over some homeless person, right?
There's a tone to the pace of the movie where reviewers are calling it "slow". I don't dispute that. However, I feel the pace showed that they had the privilege of drinking the finest wine and having a meal while discussing murder and revealing their personalities. Their circumstances outweighed their circumstances.
THE ENDING: Our natural instinct for any movie is to have a resolution, but here's my take on it: we learned that Stan knew his brother was capable of doing something heinous to Bo, the unthinkable. Like father, like son, no? Next, we have to question why Stan or nobody ran into the woods to try to find Bo? Next, we learn that when they received the call that his bill passed then they forgot about Bo for a moment. Instead they enjoyed a mild celebration and mentioned calling some guy named Michael to share the news, but Bo was still out there. What happened to all that love and parental instincts in those moments that passed? Lastly, we hear the woman get a call from Bo. The ending was the digestion stage after dinner.
This movie is just as equally about what wasn't said as what was.
