How dare you assume that teachers are teaching “mock slave auctions”! That is completely ridiculous! I am a teacher and I have taught in 4 different states. AT NO POINT IN TIME have I been required to enact mock slave auctions. Doing so has no value in our educational system. I educate my students on the facts around slavery and the Reconstruction period of our history. It only benefits EVERYONE- regardless of race, to know the facts of the history of our country. Why would I place a student in the role of a slave if I want him or her to know that she or he is equally loved and equally appreciated as a powerful member of society?!? Common sense really needs to prevail. But I get it, you feel compelled to shout inequities, but what I urge you to do is EMPOWER minority students to stand up for themselves and DO NOT assume that they are victims!
