I usually love movies with Kevin Costner, and judging from the trailer, I was excited to see this one. There are many story lines happening within this movie and none of them tie together well. Also if you love Kevin Costner, he doesn’t appear till well into the movie and doesn’t appear often. He’s just there now and again.
The big problem I had with this film is character development. It jumps around so much you never feel invested with any character and that includes Kevin’s character. This is such an issue, I can’t remember any characters name, not one. I basically felt nothing for any character, and when scenes happened with tragic death, I felt nothing at all. Usually I’m a big movie cryer. Not one tear.
The second issue is I could not pick out a clear story line or one that was very compelling. It felt like it had all the elements that could have made it a great story, but they were all jumbled and left you longing to connect to the story but unable to. The last scenes are what really clinched my opinion. It felt like they didn’t know how to end it or set the scene for the next installment, so they through together a five minute montage of mini scenes involving all the characters with music only, and you were suppose to figure out what was happening then blank screen, the end. It did not leave me wanting to see chapter two. If you are going to make a saga, you have to leave your audience wanting more. It left me wishing I hadn’t spent the money to see this, and wondering why such a mediocre movie was three hours long.
I will give it a few positives. It had some beautiful visuals and the score was pretty.
