Non-spoiler review: As someone who expected Barbie to offer a deep and truthful reflection of society through the lens of the Barbies, the film wasn't that great.
It's supposed to be a story of self-discovery, which it is, but it's quite vague as to what the discovery actually is. The storyline is coupled with a yassified speech about feminism, which got a lot of cheers and claps. I get it, and I am not against the idea. But I believe it could have been expressed through the story instead of forcing it down our throats through one monologue.
It is a colorful presentation and visually very "Barbie," but it lacks depth of script and story. Plotlines start only to be left unfinished or ended in haste with no proper explanation.
And the "Real World" is not like the real world. There was a lot of potential, but they missed it. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (and his abs) were the saving graces of the film.
If you're expecting a one-time fun flick, you'll have fun. Don't expect more.
In a line, it's not that deep.
