This is a clever presentation of American rich society's disregard and disdain for the 'clowns' - i.e everyone else on poor incomes trying to hold down a job, bring up a family, struggle with daily life , live a decent life, and yet be the bedrock of society and of the anger and frustration as fantasies which could erupt and in Arthur's world becomes a reality.
Shot through Arthur's perspective as a decent man albeit a social misfit who has survived childhood trauma whilst not realising this, but who's awkward social manners allude to a shocking past, and his gradual realisation of truths too painful to bear, in his past, his life and the world around him, he becomes the figurehead for a Clown movement of anger against the rich and the lies inherent in American society as he slides towards rebellion and anarchy, reaching his destination of insanity he seems more happy than ever.
Glossy and pitched to perfection with soundtrack, dance and Oscar winning quality acting, this is however a sinister and at times violent film which parents may be wary of sending their 15 yo children to see alone.
