honestly, not one for negative reviews on anything. but let me clear in saying this book is genuinely the most uninteresting novel i've read. perhaps i could blame this on my disinterest in romance novels, but i found it such a chore to slog through. i hate the characters and particularly the lack of quotation marks - this is not an interesting stylistic choice, just a huge irritation and grammatically incoherent. if you want the reader to really put some thought into digesting your novel, make that thought in relation to the plot or message, not whether or not the characters are conversing. this book frustrated me with its aimless 'plot' and completely vapid characters. i see people often compliment the development of the characters and i firmly believe we've read different books. the characters both start and end as insufferable and forgettable people who hurt themselves and the people around them as often as they eat food. there was not a singular interesting character or plot point and i had to force myself to finish the book to be absolutely certain in my decision to flame it. i wish i could burn this book literally, but i have to stick to writing this scathing review. i do congratulate sally rooney on the publication of her novel - what a feat. i just wished it had stayed in the drafts. there is nothing to gain and everything to lose when it comes to reading this novel. since reading and to this day i will remember the complete waste of time and absolute literary garbage that this book is. i hate everything it stands for - namely toxic relationships and soulless characters, and i believe every novelist and bookworm should be offended that this collection of pages is considered literature - let alone a literary 'achievement'. the only serious thing about it is how seriously awful it is.
