Who would have thought a person brought up in a housing scheme in glasgow would absolutely fall in love with this admittedly quirky piece of 1940s British and US wartime propaganda. Plummy Southern counties accents,token American soldier struggling to act ,whimsy everywhere, yet the overall effect is almost mystical with an intense appreciation of beautiful Kent countryside intimate tales of modern day pilgrims receiving a type of salvation once they reach Canterbury Cathedral. Haunting.

A disappointing work compared to another novel in the Glasgow Trilogy Mr Alfred M.A. An extremely forced and artificial narrative,absence of incisive wit and some ponderous prose passages make for a tiresome experience at times. Nowhere near his best.

Definitely a book for young undergraduates with a taste for literature philosophy science almost anything in fact. Variable tough these clerihews may be they are generally colourful and great fun. Learn a few and surprise the other guests at your professors wine and cheese do if such events are still on the menu.

In a desperate attempt to resurrect spacey's career it looks like some misguided individuals have attempted to create a cult movie by aping scenes and music from truly cult movies like Blue Velvet Psycho Pulp Fiction etc or maybe the whole charade is tongue in cheek
It is worth watching to see how bad films can be although it is doubtful if it will do anything to revive Spacey's career which is a real shame.

This is my favourite novel of all time -the most curious mixture of absurdism.philosophy.science.myth.and at least partly a murder mystery. O'brien takes language and concepts to their outmost limits and leaves you at times bewildered by the sheer brilliance of it all. AN ABSOLUTE TREASURE.RATiNg 5,/5.
