Brahmastra: Appreciation of the spectacle, dramatic roller-coaster ride and symbolism
I am usually of the type who informally does a sort of critical review of movies after having just watched it and focus on the loopholes and setbacks and improvement-points more than the stuff they bring to the table.. But, I would make an exception to this movie.. May be, it’s me being a simultaneous wonderer of the universe of spiritual intelligence and being a fan of larger-than-life characters and stories representing the various ideologies in the spectrum of grey..But, this time, I came back from the Hall with peace and a sense of fulfillment that comes when a movie-watching experience fulfills you in many dimensions simultaneously..
The movie is a marriage of casual with poetic, modern with mythological, real with larger-than-life and marriage of battle of ideological archetypes with a spectacle of thrilling action..And, to top them all, the marriage of Eastern with Western: A story told in the perspective of a character who can be called a playful Hindu Spider-Man dancing with fire and a troubled Batmanly soul that is traumatized by fire in a way that fits the story..
Speaking of fire, I also loved how, all the 5 elements of nature in their magnified and intensified versions are the superpowers and in many ways seemed like characters themselves.. Creativity has been shown in creating cool and magnetic super-powered characters based on Hindu mythology..And, I also loved how each element of nature, by themselves, is not good or bad in itself.. Based on whose hands the superpower is , the superpower affects the universe accordingly..
Spiritual teachers for the main characters are the combination of tough love and compassion that were very much needed to inspire grit and love simultaneously to the main character.. Interactions specially feet-touching was a nice dramatic touch and great element to aid in Hindu significance of the story-telling.. The narrative of constant thread of connection between the higher self as the ultimate representation of good and virtuous, the “Light” and the lower self as the savior, soul rebel and a “light warrior” has also been shown with perfection..
Innocence in lead positive characters and innocence in the romantic storyline brought back those old-day vibes where love used to be all about mesmerizing eyes, perfectly vibing energies and compassionate yet passionate moments..The viciousness and ruthlessness in the negative characters were equally imapactful which also caused the perfect polarity with the innocent and brave heroic characters..
A narrative where unconditional romantic love is given the same importance as divine love and acts of sacrifice made for love become the strong lights that pierce through the dark clouds are the stories that I covet..
And, if you’re like me who likes to watch movies that make you believe and suspend your disbelief simultaneously.. opens your mind up and fills up your heart simultaneously.. then, this movie is for you..
