We read this my junior year in high school. I admit the book is a bit dry. But, our teacher paired with a unit on the Great Depression and I found it fascinating. We interviewed our grandparents who had all lived through this time period (this was in 1991) and wrote speeches about it. I really enjoyed learning about history from a first person perspective. Both of my grandparents were children at the time. Both of them were farmers and thus, I learned faired better than a lot of others. They were at least able to grow their own food and make their own clothing. It sometimes meant doing things like taking apart old dresses and remaking them. They had to be creative. But, overall they were luckier than the family in the book and a lot of others.
