There was potential but jeez it lacked. It seemed they tried to take the good and thought provoking elements of 'Bird box', '2012', 'A Quiet Place', or just any dystopian film - but forgot what made them good or impactful in the first place.
The subliminal messages that everyone is saying what really made the movie good, are quite literally the most basic philosophical and existential ideas possible. "Using plastic straws but everyone secretly knows it means nothing and humanity are all horrible to each other" - give me a break. These are not new concepts; PRIMARY SCHOOLERS grasp this idea of the absurdity of technology and the inhumanity of society due to increased globalisation. It was annoying to have it presented as if the general population isn't already aware of this. I guess maybe the rich producers of this film are too out of touch to have thought much about it yet.
Some of the cinematography was good, and the intense themes like the cars piling up were interesting. But the movie dragged on so much and held so many unimportant scenes that didn't add anything to the plot. I usually love these actors: Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke, generally have great films but the acting was irritating somehow? and their characters were cliche and not complex enough to have the slow paced discussions they were having. Everyone was so ridiculously stupid. Don't even get me started on the kids.
I was bored, the other commenters here were bored, nothing new.
If someone wants to make a movie like this again with the same ideas of chaos and an overriding of society - really think it through and use the time given wisely so we're not all bored to death.
