I’m still on the fence about modernizing classics but something about a liberal take on Emily Dickinson and having her compare herself to a slave at the hight of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade in the first episode is vomit inducing. Great costume design and decent casting…but Alena Smith is raggedy as hell for this…How do you take one of most inhumane eras of human history and make it tone deaf in the 21st century? Wasted opportunity and budget. And the music? Painfully out of place. Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” is better use of an ahistorical modern score.

The production quality is great but everything else is horrendous. The writing: dialogue and characters…anemic and paper thin. The acting/casting: remarkably disconcerting at how unconvincing they are. It almost feels like a satire. Art aside…I also question the ethics of romanticizing WWII…why?!
