A very rich depiction of the frailties and triumphs of the human spirit. Through a full array of human emotions, you journey through the agony and despair of both oppressor and oppressed into their liberation through self-love and redemptive grace. We bear witness to the power of forgiveness to bring forth reconciliation in a communal setting evolving through dignity, compassion, and empowerment. We see the sexism of internalized racism and the healing power of woman to woman love. We are given much to reflect upon.
I have read the book many times, seen the first and second movies, as well as the Broadway production starring Fantasia. Even with the magnificent music and choreography of Broadway to film, I still relish the book the most which I encourage everyone to read. In juxtaposition to all of the high production, the simplicity of Alice Walker’s approach, the Ebonics that need to be read out loud to be understood, the understated phoenix rising from the ashes is truly a master piece. The same for For Colored Girls Only. Read the original works and feast in Black Female literary genius.
