First Contact embodied many of the important Star Trek hallmarks held dear by Trekkies. For this it is considered the best feature film released by Paramount by so many Star Trek fans. As well as being an "origin tale" in the ST mythology it managed to hit home runs on the quality of the storytelling, great performances by the ST cast members and the all important embodiment of Star Trek "values" as exemplified and orated throughout the film. In one scene involving Alfre Woodard and Patrick Stewart, Lily Sloane (Dr Zefrim Cochrane's assistant) asked how much the Enterprise cost. Captain Picard explained that "economics are somewhat different in the 24th century" that "money is no longer the driving force in our lives" and that "we seek to better ourselves and the world around us". Unknown to film critics everywhere, this was a pivotal scene in First Contact as Captain Picard eloquently spoke the magic words that makes the Star Trek universe so special to millions of its fans. I was there for the premier showing of First Contact in my home town and to put it mildly the Trekkies were well pleased that evening. First Contact successfully both entertained and enunciated the Star Trek values that so many fans hold dear. As utopian as it may sound to a "non-Trekkie", a brave new world of universal peace, equality for all, an end to hunger, prejudice and ignorance and an inclusive society is what Gene Roddenberry inspired into the minds of millions around the world.
