I've been a Tolkien fan since I was a kid in the 70s. I liked Ralph's animated film and loved Peter's. I've played online and role playing games set in this realm for hundreds of hours. I love the world and met my wife through a shared love of it.
I've been following this series for months and was worried that it might be awful and that the haters might be right. I've now watched the first two episodes and think it's been done amazingly well. Acting, sound, visuals, costume and story are all excellent. It's a great piece of television, probably the best television program I've ever seen (it's better than most films I've ever seen).
Negatives: I can see how they did the height difference in places a bit too clearly, but then I was looking and have read everything on how they did it in the film's. The scene with the lightning was painful to watch as the flashes were too bright. I thought the water sequence went on a little long. I'd have liked more action, but it's building nicely. Accents can be a bit odd, but I get why they do it. Maybe jumps about just a bit too much from scene to scene, but it gets away with it.
Positives: Galadriel's acting is fantastic, as is Nori. Arondir is much more convincing than I thought he would be, as is Lenny Henry. Bronwyn and her son are both good - the latter getting just the response from me that he should. The humour is good and had me laughing. Music was great. The stranger has me very intrigued. I had no issue with the script. Nothing sounded out of place to me. Visuals were stunning and were better than Jackson's movies in places.
Anyway. Loved it. I was worried after seeing the Wheel of Time, which I thought sucked, but this is thankfully another few levels above that. I was also worried that maybe the one star reviews might be right. Thankfully they're not. It's great. I'm watching it a second time as I write this. Watched it with my family who all loved it. Just magical. Well done to all those who put so much hard work into this. I never thought I'd be watching a TV series which mentioned Morgoth.
