Don’t jump into it expecting a note to note recreation of the anime. This is the mistake many are making, which causes undeserved disappointment just because it’s different. It’s not the same, in fact it’s more like a spin off series if anything. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into the juicy stuff shall we?
Casting: Netflix did a superb job on the cast- especially so with John Cho as Spike and Mustafa Shakir as Jet. Both of these guys crushed their roles, and are a big reason of why I’d love to see a season two. Daniella Pineda did a good job for the role she was given, but the role she was given is a little more quirky than the anime version- which isn’t necessarily bad but worth noting. Einstein: unarguably the best cast, 10/10 acting. Would pet. Vicious: a weaker link but not horrible, feels straight out of Harry Potter though. Other cast members ranged from “so so” to “wow, that’s actually a great casting”. Overall category rating: 8/10.
Effects: Nothing revolutionary, but on the better side for a TV series. Not much else to say here. 7/10.
Music/Sound Design: Best aspect of the show (other than Ein), you have to experience the soundtrack to feel it. Yoko and The Seatbelts do an amazing job, and really help to carry this show. 9/10.
Cinematography: Most of the time it was decent, but there were some unnecessarily over-complicated shots that were distracting. 6/10
Story: Netflix tried to go their own route, and did alright, but there were some interesting parts to say the least- and not in the best way. 7/10
Overall, one of the best adaptations we’ve seen to date of an anime, and should help to be a reference in the future. If/when we do get a season two, hopefully criticism is taken where needed to bring out the shows max potential. 7/10 series, but we’ll round up to help counteract the people rating it one star (which is absurd to say the least).
