I wanted to love this book. Especially since my family is Brazilian. But I could not get past the misuse of the Portuguese language. The insult to Brazilian culture by substituting Spanish words “ojos” instead of “olhos”. Pao Joaquim instead of Pai Joaquim, Father John was translated as Bread John? Or Wood John? What were the editors thinking? The irony is that one of the characters in the book is writing a Brazilian Portuguese dictionary. She and her editors should have consulted one themselves.
