You're Beautiful K-Drama Review (09/23/2022)
I loved this when I was much younger when it was still popular, and when everyone else was talking about it as if it were the next big thing- the reason why it was so great was because of the music, choreography, and how the story unfolded. I enjoyed it much more when I was younger because I watched it as a teenager, and it didn't bother me as much- but as I got much older and tried* to do a rerun of it in 2018- I realized that Go-Minam and Hwang Taek Kyung could've potentially become siblings. As far as we know that their parents had a romantic affair; however, my recent rerun through it made it all the difference. It didn't verify if they did have an affair or not-but. There were still some plot holes about her father and with his father, given he receives gifts on his birthday each year from his dad, but we never see or hear of him. (??)
The triangle love was not my cup of tea; even when I first went through it, it wasn't something I enjoyed overall. I felt that- it could've still been well-written without having to make Jeremy have feelings for Minam, and I say this because I felt that- even though Jeremy did question his sexuality throughout the series, his screen time was minimal and so-crushing on Minam sort of took a toll on his character, he was sweet and let go instantly, I felt that Shin-woo and Tae Kyung were enough to draw tension.
Honestly, I loved how Jang Keun-Suk looked as Hwang Taek Kyung; he played that role beautifully, and even though his character was rough around the edges (PRIDEFUL), the character itself is relatable. Most Korean dramas have a perfect boyfriend as the main lead, and in the real world, men aren't as great as we see them onscreen, so having a non-romantic smooth talker be the main guy was unique. However, it still didn't earn four stars, just because of the plot hole with the parents' previous storyline and the unnecessary triangle love. Overall, I did enjoy my rerun as an adult.
