I love jazz! I saw Dave Brubeck on his 80th in San Francisco at Masonic auditorium. He has just come from a tour in England. He stood up and said it was a bus tour and pretty awful. The manager said, don’t worry we are on our way to a London flat. On the way he wrote London Flat London Sharp. You play sax. Personal jazz friends: Eli Degirbi, Barak Mori, Ed Cherry, Jerome Jennings; they’ve all been to my place.
In SF a few places have an open to jazz musicians jazz on Mondays. Barak, Eli and I went to a small local spot. We waited and played pool. Eli and Barak got on the small stage with sax and guitar, there were maybe 20 people in the place. Eli started playing and I couldn’t believe it, a few guys knew who he was and were in ahhh! The boys just wanted to play together out of the spot light. It was a small spot light not a huge gig. They had so much fun. Jazz isn’t dead. I saw Django great grandson play at Bird it took 4 guys to play as fast as Django and he was missing a finger! I’ve been to Jazz in caves in Paris.
I don’t know how old you are, and perhaps you need to find a way to legitimize jazz to your generation. Snarky Puppy, New Orleans, Trombone Shorty, Dr Joh, Chucho Valdez, Hiromi, Charlie Parker the list goes on and have a huge collection of Jazz vinyl. I do think Miles a few others can be a little too aggressive and not pleasing to me ears.
Surely you’ve see. Buena Vista Social Club.
I’ll follow you and I wish you the absolute best in your musical endeavors.
