I first read this book 30 years ago and remember loving it- He is undoubtedly a great storyteller all the right ingredients in the right order, extremely well defined characters, who you love or hate. Having 30 years of reading in between Im not quite as enamoured as first time round. It is undoubtedly a fantastic switch-off and escape read, but for me the polarised characters who all over-achieved in whatever they engaged in was a too much and distracted from the plausibility of the plot, a little too direct a path to an expected (and hoped for) conclusion. Having said all that I’m still going to re-read the whole series now🤷♂️
PS-I can’t believe that someone brought up racism, the book was written in the first person as an Egyptian Slave 4000 years ago! Some people seem to be incapable of putting events into there historical context!
