This book filled a void that I didn't know I had all my life. Being a child of Vietnamese immigrants myself, I've always heard about the stories of the diaspora and the hardships of uprooting and finding roots in a foreign land in pursuit of a better life. Thi Bui did a beautiful and impactful job contextualizing and illustrating the experience of her family, and many other Vietnamese refugees.
It broke me. But it made me want to hug my parents a little harder and call them to say I love them.
