Joaquin Phoenix mumbles his way through a stilted, one-dimensional performance relieved only by magnificent battle scenes but yet still interrupted by tiresome, etiolated extended romance scenes with a clearly disinterested ‘Josephine,’ played haplessly by the otherwise remarkable Vanessa Kirby (most recently Tom Cruise’s antagonist in Mission Impossible).

Truly terrible acting. Implausible setting; we hover over a desert setting in the credits, but the General is missing his daughter (who left the confines of the fort) and we are suddenly in a dense forest. Really? Just too jarring even for suspension of disbelief
