It's engaging for a bit, but still lacking a lot of polish considering it's now version 1.0. Some things are also a bit eye rolling:
One of my biggest gripes is healing. In the middle of combat you'll want to bring up your inventory and take some meds. When you take meds outside of the inventory screen they take time heal you, it's not instant full health. Annoyingly, this persists in the inventory screen. The inventory menu tries to give you the impression that it hasn't paused the game - even though it has. Sounds continue playing, but the game is paused and enemies are essentially just frozen still. If I'm in combat, this means I have to sit staring at the pause menu while my health slowly, slowly fills up after popping a pill. That's a really dumb game design choice. We all know it's paused, just make the meds heal instantly.
There's also this weird disconnect between the environment and how you're forced to interact with it. The first cave you enter is full of flashlights placed so as to shine atmospherically against various walls. You can turn them off (for some reason) and on, but you can't pick them up. You're forced to use starting lightsource, an lighter... There are large expensive tents all around the map - relics from previous visitors to the forest. You can't dismantle them and take them with you for use. You're stuck sleeping under tarp and sticks... There's an expansive base building system, but once you start a permanent base the mutants will start coming at you in frequent waves, giving you no real incentive NOT live as a tarp-and-sticks-dwelling nomad.
