I wouldn't recommend spending your money in a theater to watch this movie. Captain Marvel definitely didn't meet my standard expectation of what Marvel movies are. It felt rushed, and characters and story as a whole were shallow. The movie gave very little reason to root for Captain Marvel. The action scenes were choppy, and the CGI was low quality for a 2019 movie, especially with movies like Alita, Battle Angel coming out showcasing excellent digital arts.
I know this is supposed to be an origin story, which are generally my favorite. The Captain Marvel movie does NOT do a good job painting a solid background for Carol Danvers. There are several MCU origin stories that are truly great. Iron Man, for instance, shows us Tony Stark going from "billionaire playboy" to a mere man in a cave, fighting to survive, so he can escape captivity. Along the way, he experiences loss, suffering, and pain, and learns what it means to become a hero. There was very little meaningful driving force behind Carol Danvers actions in Captain Marvel. She did not experience a tremendous loss of a friend, or have a great need to survive/beat the odds, or anything else significant that might push her to fight for the greater good (although I suppose that may be up for debate). What I'm getting at, and as I've said before, is that the story was not great and the characters were pretty shallow.
With all that being said, I would rate the movie a solid 6/10. It could have been so much better, but I'm glad it was not worse. I think that it is an alright movie, and should be rented or watched on a streaming service once that becomes available. It should be watched before Infinity War: Endgame, but I for one will not be needing or wanting a second viewing.
Thank you for reading my review! As always, it would be best to watch the movie yourself and come to your own conclusion. This review is my personal opinion, and comes with my own views and bias.
