Growing up Kentucky and having roots in Appalachia, I appreciate the honesty of this memoir and movie. The acting is superb and the subject of childhood trauma from a chaotic upbringing is not pretty. But J.D.Vance's life experience and ability to convey his hopefulness in the face of hopelessness is not lost on me. I read the book and thought it was excellent, and the movie does not disappoint.
