The book is written in a popular and easy style. It is enjoyable to read. This is also its weakness. Populus repeats popularly some held but poorly considered historical analyses. Tom Holland’s explanation of the origin of Christian festivals, for example, is far better evidenced, more reasonable, and less influenced by narratives invented closer to our own time.
